Making Ends Meet – Fun maths sessions at SPP Pumps

A series of FREE Maths themed learning workshops were put on for employees of SPP Pumps and their friends and families during Adult learners Week thanks to collaboration between Coleford Area Partnership, SPP Pumps and Workplace Learning Advocates – a national initiative.

The sessions came about after Laura Hurcombe, trained as a Maths Champion under the Workplace Learning Advocates initiative, led in the South West by a local education trainer, Kris Ventris-Field.

The ‘Making Ends Meet’ sessions covered top tips on budgeting and getting best value from your pound. One session looked at the maths children are doing in schools, so parents would be better able to support them.

Feedback from attendees was that they loved the informal style of learning and felt comfortable sharing skills and ideas. Goody Bags filled with items supplied generously by local businesses where enjoyed by all attendees.

Those that attended are now keen to have more sessions – and have discussed topics such as sharing moneysaving recipes and breeding pigs to save money.

Laura Hurcombe spoke at a National NIACE Conference on 17th June about this scheme.

Future courses, that SPP are considering offering (again completely free of charge!) to all SPP Employees friends and families are:-

  • Ask the Experts – (Financial advisers, mortgage advisers, pension advisors etc)
  • Photography for beginners
  • Local History
  • Genealogy
  • Dyslexia: An Introduction

If you are interested in any of these topics or have any specific requests or suggestions please contact Laura Hurcombe.
